What steps to take to inculcate reading habit in a 6 year old child?

- Read to them every day from infancy....whoops!
- Read to them every night, and practice readers with him/her every day. Lots of praise. If they get the fundamental sounds of all the letters down pat their confidence will jump greatly and they will enjoy it more. My son did not like reading last year. He struggled with it. We practiced the alphabet sounds and what they looked like and read the bible in the morning, little readers from www.abeka.com, and I or my husband read bedtime stories to him at night. Now he loves to read and is very proud of his self when he does.
- Read to them often. Encourage them when they want to read, and help them if need be. Give them alphabet letters, and alphabet books. Show them words in books and tell them what the word is. Encourage them alot when they try to say the alphabet. Remember ENCOURAGING is the word. When they try, but don't get it right, be happy that they tryed, and help them to get it right. Smiles are the best kind of encouragement there is and always read them a bedtime story. NEVER SWAY IT! and get alot of books to read so you don't get bored with the same old ones every day.
- keepp on readinhg
- In addition to reading TO them, let them catch you reading often. Unplug the boob tube.
- you need to let them see that reading is important. if you read, they'll read. they want to be like you. show them all the reasons you read... to get information, to learn, for enjoyment... let them read comic books or whatever interests them... what they read is not as important as why they read. Don't forget, many people do the vast majority of their reading online these days... That counts, too.
- allow the child to explore books they have an interest in.. start at the library...tell them they are allowed to choose any book they want.. if they take good care of it and bring it back they can take more home!!! it is in the excitement in how you tell them!
- Yes - as others said read to them even just 15 minutes every night in a special place for fun. Also you should read yourself. one of the advantages of reading to young children is that you can prop them on your lap so they can 'read along'. But you can do that with older kids too. But even if they can't see the book, it's okay, the habit is just about getting entertainment from books. Remember that any book is good - whatever looks fun! Check with teachers for popular books for that age.
