What is the purpose of summer reading programs?

How can it benefit homeschoolers, especially those who are home educated? Correction.....What I meant was how can it benefit those who are home educated?

1. to keep people learning and interested in books all summer not just during the school year.
2. To keep your little mind fresh with learning. Books by great thinkers are an outstanding choice. Rush Limbaugh Sean Hannity Oliver North Bill O'Reilly are just a few. Bill O'Reilly has a couple of books for the 10-16 year old crowd too.
3. so your brain doesn't turn into mush during the summer and the teachers don't have to restart your brain the first weeks of the semester. Plus it's the only way to cover some great classics in the allotted time
